Ministry Tips Social Media, Leadership, And Communication Tips To Help You Lead Others

How Much Time Do People In Your Church Spend On Facebook, Twitter, And Pinterest?

It’s no surprise that people in your church body are spending a lot of time online and engaging with their various social networks. Wise churches and non-profits know that they should be spending time connecting with people where they live, work, and play, and in this day and age “online” falls into 2 out of 3  of those categories. (Almost) Everything You’ve Always Wanted To Know About Twitter But Were Afraid To Ask

In my job as the Director of Digital Ministry (yes, that’s a real job.) I’m often asked questions like:

“What sorts of things should I (my ministry / my church / my Goldendoodle, etc)  tweet about?”

“How can I get more people to follow me, and as a result become super awesome on twitter?”

“What’s the best Twitter iPhone app?”

How Churches Are Using Social Media

The following info graph shows some interesting statistics on how churches used social media (Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, etc) in 2012. Here are some of the facts that really stood out to me.

  • 51% of churches said that at least one of their senior staff regularly blogs or updates social media.
  • 74% of churches do not have a paid staff member that updates their church’s social media pages. (I predict this statistic will change drastically over the next few years.)
  • 56% of churches allowed and/or encouraged staff members to update their personal social media pages while at work.
  • Over 75% of churches surveyed are not maximizing their social media reach.
